Whilst much of his children’s fiction is now sadly out of print, his series of detective novels featuring Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle endures. He has published two volumes of diaries ( Breaking the Code, which chronicled his time at Westminster, and the more general Something Sensational to Read on the Train) and a memoir ( Odd Boy Out) as well as biographies of royalty including commemorative volumes on Prince Philip and Elizabeth II. Many of his works concern language and its usage, such as Have You Eaten Grandma? and Word Play, as well as a pithy history of Britain, a guide to happiness, compendiums of quotations and anecdotes, poetry anthologies for both adults and children and books of riddles and jokes for young readers. Brandreth is also a much sought-after awards host and after dinner speaker.īrandreth has penned a wide variety of books ranging across both fiction and non-fiction. From 1992 to 1997 he was the Conservative MP for Chester, attaining the position of Lord Commissioner of the Treasury in 1996.
